My Creative Process

I've remained primarily drawn to African textiles and designs but my work is also influenced by world textiles.  As a self-taught artist, over time I've developed a style that blends different influences with my own ideas, seamlessly together. I use acrylic enamel gloss and a sharp wooden stick to draw and build textured designs. I paint free-hand, approximately 50%stickwork/50%brushwork. It's a time consuming process but well worth it to achieve the look and texture I desire. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. You may see a pattern or image repeated but there is always something different about it, the object, color, border, something has changed.

My overall body of work is an eclectic array of things. Some I've purchased, some donated by thoughtful friends and acquaintances. It's worth noting the majority of my bottles I find discarded on the streets, sidewalks and beautiful lakefront of Chicago during morning walks. I repurpose them from litter into original works of art. I paint a lot in black and white because of the bold, tribal feel the combination gives my pieces. You can see and feel the texture of my work. That is my main intention.
